North Vancouver Tree Removal - West Vancouver Tree Removal - Bylaw and Policy Guidelines


Below is a short summery of North Vancouver District and West Vancouver District tree permit requirements. For complete information regarding tree removal and pruning restrictions, to obtain detailed permit information or view the official bylaws and policies, please visit the appropriate municipal website.
District of North Vancouver

Permit required for private property if:

  • Tree is greater than 75cm diameter measured at 1 meter from the ground
  • Tree is within 15m of a non-fish bearing stream
  • Tree is within 30m of a fish bearing stream
  • Tree is on a slope greater than 30% (16.5 degrees)
  • Tree is a Western Yew and has a diameter greater than 25cm measured at .80m from the ground

If any of the above conditions apply, the first step is to submit an arborist report to the District. The tree will then be inspected by the municipal arborist and you will be informed when the permit is ready for pickup.

If tree is on municipal land

District of West Vancouver

Permit required for private property if:

  • Trees within Creek Corridors and Foreshore
  • Trees within covenant areas

If any of the above conditions apply, your arborist must submit an application to the District and a $100.00 application fee (as of Jan. 2012) paid to the municipality. The tree will then be inspected by the municipality and your arborist will receive the permit.

If tree is on municipal land

  1. Call the West Vancouver Parks Department if you think the tree is a risk. 604-925-7192
  2. If tree is not high risk - fill out a permit application.
  3. Get 80% of affected neighbours' signatures.
  4. Submit complete application with appropriate fee to the District.
